Members of the Band Los Lobos to Appear at Distinctive Dia de Los Lobos Event at the Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside
Riverside, CA – Three members of the four-time-Grammy-winning band Los Lobos will appear on November 9, 2023, at the Fox Performing Arts Center. This appearance is a celebration of the band’s 50 years as one of the foremost musical inspirations of the historic Chicano Movement in California and is the Riverside community’s homage to these culture and music icons. The event is timed to follow the Dia de Los Muertos weekend and precede the release of a feature documentary film currently in production that tells the Los Lobos story.
The unique evening event, a collaboration of the Fox Riverside Theater Foundation; Native Sons Films; and the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art and Culture, will feature extended excerpts from the film, accompanied by music from band members David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, and Cesar Rosas, and stories from the band members and award-winning filmmakers.
“This is a great honor for the Fox Foundation, and we are so grateful to Anthony Small for conceiving the idea of doing something special in Riverside,” said Executive Director Cynthia Wright. “It is thrilling to present an early peek at parts of the film, and we believe it will feel like these legendary, history-making musicians just showed up with the filmmakers to visit with audience members in their own living rooms.”
Small, of Anthony Small Music, grew up in Riverside and is an Executive Producer on the documentary.
“There is so much in Riverside that aligns with what we’re doing in the film, in terms of history, art, and culture, and we are privileged to present this event at the historic Fox,” he said.
The Fox Riverside Theater Foundation is reaching out to surrounding school districts to attract as many as 1,500 students, middle school through college, to a morning event that will also feature extended film excerpts, as well as commentary and storytelling from Doug Blush and Piero F. Giunti, co-directors of the documentary.
Blush is an award-winning filmmaker and educator, and his work includes more than 130 feature and television projects. Recent credits include the 2013 Oscar winner 20 FEET FROM STARDOM, the 2019 Peabody Award-winning MR. SOUL! and THE ELEPHANT WHISPERERS, which was awarded the
Best Documentary Short Film at this year’s Academy Awards. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and American Cinema Editors (A.C.E.).
Giunti is an award-winning filmmaker and photographer, who has photographed musicians such as Becky G, Public Enemy, Ice Cube and Los Tigres Del Norte. His directorial work can be seen on Los Lobos’
Native Sons music video and his art is featured on the album cover of Los Lobos’ Native Sons. In addition, his work has appeared in an impressive list of publications, including Rolling Stone, Vogue (US, Mexico, Arabia editions), and The Los Angeles Times.
A more intimate session, in the middle of the day, at the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art and Culture will allow a limited number of guests to experience a more intensive art discussion with Giunti, Blush, and band member Louie Perez, who is gifted in the visual arts, as well as musical.
Foundation officials believe that the day’s outreach will impact a broader spectrum of students than ever before, as the event includes culture, film, history, language, music, and visual arts. The outreach component of Dia de Los Lobos is made possible with support from California Humanities, a non-profit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities (visit CALHUM.org).
“This is exactly the kind of outreach that represents our mission,” said Maria Smith, President of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. “These kids are going to have a rare look inside some wonderful, creative, and entertaining minds and, for some of them, a look at new perspectives.”
